Jesus Rejected All Four

Jesus divorced himself from the national destiny of Israel...

He rejected all four sects of Second Temple Judaism.

1) The Sadducees were aristocratic priests who controlled the temple and derived their authority hereditarily. They were the ultimate institutionalists...Jesus attacked them directly by clearing the Temple and declaring the Temple cult obsolete.

2) The Pharisees were the legalists - they turned the Torah into a bureaucracy of compliance. They were sincere and believed they were preserving tradition...Jesus called them whitewashed tombs - clean on the outside, dead on the inside. The law was no replacement for interiority.

3) The Essenes withdrew. They saw the corruption of the Temple by the Sadducees and the legalism of the Pharisees, and retreated into the desert...Jesus didn't retreat into a purified community. He walked straight into the mess - into the cities, into the Temple, into the homes of tax collectors and sinners.

4) The Zealots wanted revolution. They saw Rome as the enemy and military resistance as the answer...Jesus refused this entirely - when Peter drew a sword, Jesus told him to put it away...when the crowds wanted to make him king, he withdrew...the basileia tou theou - the kingdom of God - was not a political program...it was a new order of reality operative through a transformed interior.

Jesus rejected all four because all four are a species of the same error - substituting the horizontal for the vertical. That is, trying to find meaning in pathetic CONTINGENT structures (race, nationality, lineage) instead of something interior.

Christians don't know the first thing about Jesus.

Islam as a religion has retrofitted Jesus as a peddler of monotheism (as if that's the big revelation!) because Islam has structurally precluded the comprehension of Jesus' message at the metaphysical level (and I'm not talking about denying Jesus' divinity, which has nothing to do with the message of Jesus).

And the Jews...well, I'm almost done writing my short book about the Jews.

Jesus preached a message about the basileia tou theou - "the kingdom of God".

Christianity is a religion built by Paul that ignores Jesus' message and coopts Jesus into a cosmic redeemer - a metaphysical transactions for your sins.

I'm not in a position to verify the truth of the resurrection, but that's irrelevant to my point that Jesus' message got lost in all of this...

Jesus asked for interior transformation; Paul is asking for atonement through belief.
